Dead Women Poets Society

I run a poetry society with Bryony White where we meet once a month to read the works of dead women poets, focusing on the works of a different poet each time. Each member chooses a poem by the poet we've selected to read and discuss with the group, accompanied by food and plenty of wine.

Inspired by a Sunday evening watch of the seminal 90s coming-of-age film/twinkly-eyed Robin Williams vehicle Dead Poets Society, we wanted to incorporate more poetry in our lives, in particular works by female poets who are, unfortunately, so often overlooked in favour of dry old bores like Coleridge or Scott.

So far, we've read:

  • Maya Angelou

  • Sylvia Plath

  • Adrienne Rich

  • Sappho

  • Emily Dickinson

  • Muriel Rukeyser

  • Hope Mirlees

  • Rosemary Tonks

  • Marianne Moore

  • June Jordan

At the moment we're not accepting new members due to space constraints, but we are looking at ways to expand DWP for the future. If you're interested in joining, please get in touch via email.
